SpaceX's proposed expansion of launch operations in Florida has sparked anger among nudists, leading to resistance efforts against Elon Musk's scheme.

In the sun-kissed state of Florida, a unique battle is unfolding. At the heart of the dispute is Playalinda Beach, a legally nude stretch of shoreline within the Canaveral National Seashore, which is under threat due to SpaceX's ambitious plans for the next-generation Starship rocket.

The American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR), the country's largest and oldest nudist organization, represents thousands of people seeking nudist destinations. For them, Playalinda Beach is more than just a beach; it's an essential part of their community. Erich Schuttauf, the executive director of AANR, has voiced concerns about the potential closure of Playalinda Beach, stating that it would be an existential threat to one of the few legally sanctioned clothing-optional public beaches in Florida.

However, SpaceX is expanding operations at Kennedy Space Center with the aim of launching the Starship rocket. Construction of a towering launch pad has been underway for over a year, indicating that SpaceX expects approval despite public feedback. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently reviewing SpaceX's draft environmental impact statement for Starship.

The closure of Playalinda Beach could lead to up to 60 days of annual closure due to wide exclusion zones required during tests and launches. This potential closure has raised concerns not only among nudists but also among environmentalists. Both groups have voiced concerns about SpaceX's environmental footprint, including falling rocket debris, noise pollution, and habitat disruption.

If Playalinda Beach is closed, many nudists may migrate to Apollo Beach, a smaller clothing-optional shoreline in nearby Volusia County. However, Apollo Beach is more regulated and bordered by beaches where nudity is not allowed, which could lead to tension between nudists and their more clothed neighbors.

Not everyone sympathizes with the concerns of nudists. Max West, an aspiring space photographer, dismissed their concerns about the potential closure of Playalinda Beach, viewing it as a necessary cost for space exploration. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' office has praised the SpaceX project, citing $1.8 billion of SpaceX capital investment and the creation of 600 new full-time jobs in the Space Coast by 2030.

The fate of Playalinda Beach remains uncertain as construction continues and the FAA inches toward a decision on SpaceX's draft environmental impact statement for Starship. Both nudists and environmentalists have raised questions about how far the space industry can push without trampling over public lands and public freedoms. The future of Playalinda Beach, a unique and cherished destination for many, hangs in the balance.
