Strategies for Combating Creative Paralysis in Writing
Nailing down those words flowing through your head can be more daunting than you'd think. It's not so much about pondering what to write, but organizing your thoughts and getting them into a coherent sequence.
Here are my tricks to conquer that pesky writer's block:
Deadline Driven
Remember back in school when you had an essay due? Procrastination was my best friend, but that ticking deadline forced me to get over the hurdle. Apply the same technique to your writing – give yourself deadlines, even if it's a self-imposed one.
Move Your Butt
Sometimes the block is just a result of overthinking. You've stared at a blank screen for too long, and inspiration seems nowhere to be found. Get up, step away from the computer, and let your brain wander. Dust off your trainers, do some chores, or just go for a stroll. You'll be surprised how having a change of scenery spark creativity.
Swipe Someone Else's Words
Plagiarizing is a big no-no, but you can still seek inspiration from others. Find a quote or paragraph that resonates with your own ideas, then twist it to suit your writing style. Another approach is to directly copy someone's words, but make sure to alter them before publication to make them your own.
Map it Out
Often, it's about organization. My writing usually starts with a jumble of ideas screaming at me simultaneously. All I need is a good outline to structure them, making it easier to follow and express my central message.
Talk It Out
Discussing your thoughts out loud can help crystallize your ideas. Chat with a friend, toss around ideas, and let them provide feedback. We now live in an era with countless technological tools that can assist you in your writing journey. Don't just rely on dictation, explore AI-powered options that help refine your writing.
Fill Up Your Gut
A hungry mind can't think straight. No matter how much of a cerebral exercise writing is, you still need sustenance. Indulge in something stomach-filling, but health-conscious as well. A mix of caffeine, proteins, whole grains, and a bit of fat should keep your brain energized and focused.
Just Start Writing
Here's my least favorite tip for overcoming writer's block—just start writing! I know it sounds simple, but there's some truth to it. Write about anything, not necessarily what you're struggling with. Once you start flowing, you'll find inspiration to return to your original idea.
