Berdybaeva, who couldn't mask her distress at a court hearing, said emotionally, "I'm drowning in despair. My family and I have been overwhelmed by societal pressure. The uproar started brewing in April, with a picture of a scenic tulip arrangement popping up on social media. Netizens leapt to conclusions that Berdybaeva had snatched rare, endangered flowers, igniting a storm of criticism. Berdybaeva later clarified that her kids had plucked the tulips during a family stroll along the Kandagash city road, a spot where livestock graze, and where there's no 'No Tulip Picking' signs.
At the trial, Berdybaeva offered two endorsements of her character - one from the school principal of her daughter's school and another from neighborhood elders. Both documents lauded the girls' behavior and Berdybaeva's diligent performance of her public duties.
The burning question remains: were the tulips in the snapshot of a protected species? An expert examination can't be conducted anymore since the bouquet has perished. Invited specialist Artur Kantarbaev from the regional forestry inspection couldn't pinpoint the flower species from the image.
"There are two species of red-listed tulips in our region - Kauffmann and Schrenk. However, I can't confirm which flowers are in the picture from the photo," the expert admitted.
The court hearing is ongoing. As of now, there's no definitive verdict on whether she broke any laws. However, the mere initiation of a legal case against the official has sparked turmoil in the public domain.
