Inside, it houses the xylem and phloem, which deliver water, minerals, and nutrients between the roots and higher parts of the plant. Additionally, plant stems generate new plant tissue, store vital compounds, and serve as underground storage organs like potatoes and ginger. They come in various names depending on the species, such as culm, vine, halm, haulm, or thyrsus.
