Check It Out I first stepped foot on Australia back in 2019. At that time, I had been there for close to 9 months,, traveling the entire country in a van, falling head over heels with the land Down Under.
Reflecting on those days, the experiences and memories still rank among the best I've ever had. My life took a drastic turn, I gained a fresh perspective on life, learned a ton about myself, discovered what truly matters to me, and created memories that shall last a lifetime.
After nearly a year of Aussie adventuring, I found myself back in my hometown of Cologne in the summer of 2020. I'd completed a 3-year dual business administration degree because I certainly didn't know what to do with myself before Australia. The shift from 9 months of absolute freedom to adjusting to a Cologne lockdown under Covid boom times was one hell of a culture shock. But life moves on, doesn't it?
Eventually, I realized that my corporate career wasn't the right fit for me. So, I completed my studies and declined renewing my contract. Miraculously, I was granted another Working Holiday Visa for Australia in 2023. Since then, I've been Down Under once more and I'm convinced that taking the leap and starting a new adventure was the best decision I ever made.
But let's get back on track. Today, I want to share some tips and tricks for backpacking in Australia, so you can save a few extra coins for your travel fund. After all, who doesn't want to extend their Aussie adventure, right?

Give It a Go First off, hats off to you! If you're here, it seems like you're not adverse to the idea of travel, work, and backpacking. And my advice? Just do it! Take that leap! Regardless of whether you're fresh out of school or feeling stuck in a rut at work... Whatever the reason, just go for it! Travel will create unforgettable memories that'll last a lifetime.
Five years ago, I boarded a plane without a care in the world, heading off on my first big adventure and leaving my bubble of comfort behind. That was the start of my longest journey yet. I didn't have a clue what to expect, but I knew I wanted change. After a year of amazing experiences, I returned to Germany, and let me tell you, the Cologne lockdown was a hard pill to swallow. But as they say in Australia, no worries, mate! Everything worked out in the end.
So, I landed in Brisbane with my girlfriend. Before our departure, we had gathered some intel about what needed to be done. For our first month, we found a cozy Airbnb in a quaint suburb of Brisbane, which is my first tip for you.
Tip 0 (0, because we've already sorted out the basics)
Now, the big question arises... Travel or work first? Buy a car or take the public transit?
Ultimately, the decision lies with you. To answer the question about buying a car, let me tell you, having your own vehicle gives you a sense of freedom like no other. You can reach places that you simply can't with public transit. Of course, buying a car requires a bigger upfront investment and comes with its own set of risks. But don't forget, you can sleep in your car and save tons on hostels.
If the topic of buying a car sparks your interest, you can count on me to make a separate post all about it.
