Travelling by sea from Denmark to Norway via ferry
Embarking on an exciting journey, Kathryn Bird, the founder of Wandering Bird, and her companions set off on a motorhome trip from Denmark to Norway. Their chosen ferry route was the Hirtshals (Denmark) to Kristiansand (Norway) service, operated by companies like Fjord Line and Color Line. The ferry journey, approximately 2 hours long, offered a comfortable crossing with a typical duration of about 3 hours.
The total cost of the ferry trip was €462.20, broken down as follows: Adults €14 each, Seats €26 each, Motorhome (high car up to 8m) €235.20, and a small trailer up to 5m €107. Booking a seat on the ferry is recommended, as it provides a quiet and comfortable area with free amenities.
Upon arrival in Norway, the travelers found a lovely spot 20 minutes south, on a quiet road next to a beautiful lake. However, an initially chosen spot for parking turned out to be an illegal parking area. Fortunately, they managed to find a suitable spot, which is provided on the map.
The town they arrived at upon disembarking the ferry was described as very nice with plenty of shops. After a long day of travel, most restaurants and takeaways were still open, even at nearly 1am.
In preparation for their journey, Kathryn offers a free Europe Road Trip Checklist. This includes essential kit, paperwork, and useful gear to take. Declaring alcohol and tobacco on the Norwegian Customs App is necessary to avoid fines and to use the 'green' lane instead of the 'red' lane.
Unfortunately, the food in the Hirtshals cafe was not recommended. However, a Lidl is located about an hour away from Hirtshals for those seeking grocery options. Hirtshals is a small town with limited attractions, but it has a motorhome service point and a cafe.
As they continue their adventure, Kathryn and her companions plan to share a video about their wild camping experience in Denmark in a motorhome. They are also offering subscribers the opportunity to receive emails with motorhome travel and road trip tips from Wandering Bird.
Despite the occasional challenges, Kathryn's unexpected journey from being an air traffic controller to a motorhome travel website founder is a testament to the spirit of adventure and the joy of exploring the world in a unique way.
