University-based city development project in Essen

In the heart of Essen, a new city cargo bike station has been inaugurated, marking a significant step towards promoting environmentally friendly mobility habits. Located at Segerothstraße, right in front of the university's Audimax, this station is the tenth of its kind in the city.

The station, part of a growing cargo bike network in Essen, is a joint initiative by the city portal and nextbike GmbH. The city cargo bike offered at this station is manufactured by Riese & Müller, a renowned electric cargo bike manufacturer.

The city cargo bike, known as the e-Dolly, offers electrical pedal assistance up to 25 km/h and a continuously variable transmission. It can transport up to 80 kilograms in a 220-liter transport box and has a bench with safety belts for transporting one or two children. This versatile vehicle provides an easy way to transport groceries, deliveries, or luggage without needing a car.

The new station reduces car dependency for short inner-city trips at the university location, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions. The city cargo bike network in Essen is expanding to twenty locations by spring 2026, with stations planned for Berliner Platz (near the Cinemaxx cinema), Südviertel (Corner of Isenbergstraße / Witteringstraße), Nordviertel (University), Rüttenscheid (Rüttenscheider Stern and Mobilstation Florastraße), Holsterhausen (Gemarkenplatz), Frohnhausen (Gervinusstraße), Borbeck (Borbeck Station), Altenessen (Altenessen Mitte), Steele (Grendplatz), and more.

Users can find the latest information on available stations and bikes directly in the Nextbike app. Access to the city cargo bike begins with a simple registration via the Nextbike or ZÄPP app. The station promotes environmentally friendly mobility habits among students, employees, and residents, aligning with the city's commitment to sustainable urban development.

On September 17, 2025, the new city cargo bike station was officially inaugurated, marking a milestone in Essen's journey towards a greener and more sustainable city. The city cargo bike network is set to revolutionise short-distance transportation in Essen, making it more accessible, eco-friendly, and convenient for all.
