Urban Development Day 2025 in Saarlouis: Community Discourse at Gutenberg Square

In the heart of Saarlouis, on Gutenberg Square, a town hall meeting took place, focusing on the role of urban development promotion in fostering social cohesion and urban development. The event, which was part of the nationwide Day of Urban Development Promotion, was opened by Mayor Carsten Quirin and Saarland Minister for the Interior, Building, and Sport, Reinhold Jost.

Mayor Quirin emphasized the importance of urban development promotion as a tool for improving the quality of life in neighborhoods. He explained that urban development promotion creates spaces for interaction, supports social cohesion, and enables investments in future-proof infrastructure.

Minister Jost echoed these sentiments, highlighting the diverse effects of urban development promotion in Saarland. He pointed to measures for local clubs, sustainability, climate contributions, and intergenerational meeting point design as examples. He expressed pride in the achievements of Saarland's municipalities and their commitment to ensuring a high quality of life for the people of Saarland in the long term.

One prime example of successful urban development promotion is the redesigned Gutenberg Square. The square, which combines ecological responsibility with functional design, benefits the city's people. A guided tour of the newly designed square was offered during the event.

The event also provided opportunities for dialogue with citizens, under the motto 'Come and talk.' Deputy Mayor Gerald Purucker presented central projects of urban development promotion, including the redesign of Gutenberg Square. He also performed the symbolic handover of the funding decision for the energy-efficient renovation of the Vogelsang School, which is part of the Saarland school construction program BAUSETEIN.

The 'on Tour' neighborhood management, represented by Jessica Fischer and Dr. Viola Kirchner, provided information on ongoing projects. A walkable city map was available, along with contributions from the AG Klimastark on voluntary climate protection engagement.

Urban development promotion in Saarland also includes considerations for flood protection in the design of intergenerational meeting points. This commitment to sustainability and resilience was evident throughout the town hall meeting and the redesigned Gutenberg Square.

Mayor Quirin and Minister Jost were available for personal conversations during the event, further demonstrating the commitment of Saarland's leadership to engaging with citizens and hearing their thoughts on urban development promotion. The town hall meeting on Gutenberg Square was a testament to the importance of urban development promotion and its role in shaping the future of Saarland's cities and communities.
