Urban transformation project: pupils create decorative electricity boxes in Rüttenscheid
In Essen-Rüttenscheid, Power Cabinets Transform into Street Art
Ten power cabinets in the Rüttenscheid district have undergone a significant transformation, thanks to a collaboration between students from Maria-Wächtler-Gymnasium and local organizations. Emulating harmonic integration with the streetscape, the refresh of these cabinets beautifies the district.
The project saw students from grade 10, specifically from an art class and the art-social science course, designing the power cabinets. The art-social science subject, elective at Maria-Wächtler-Gymnasium, exposes students to various aspects of art in social contexts, including design, advertising, photography, architecture, and art in public spaces. The young artists tailored the designs to their specific surroundings for harmonious aesthetic and structural alignment with the streetscape.
Locations for the revamped cabinets include Isabella Street, the barber Guido Bösherz, Rüttenscheider Straße at the National Bank, Glockengapotheke, Café Cookie Jar, the Hedwigstraße playground, Franziskastraße/Höhe "Wein&Glas", Christinenpark, and the Julienstraße and Paulinenstraße bus stop.
Notably, the Interessengemeinschaft (IG) Rüttenscheid and Westnetz have provided support for the project. Teachers Inga Simon, Mascha Fahrnbach, and teacher trainee Emma Bruns managed the initiative.
Though specific details about this project could not be found, community engagement with local artists is common in street art endeavors. To recover more detailed information, contacting local art organizations or educational institutions in Essen may be beneficial.
The project not only transformed ten power cabinets into works of art, but also creatively enhanced the home-and-garden-like atmosphere of the Rüttenscheid district, ensuring a cohesive lifestyle integration. The students, guided by their art-social science course, designed each cabinet with careful consideration for their surrounding environment, contributing to the beauty and harmony of the streetscape.
