On September 19, 2025, the city of Mannheim will join several other German cities in participating in the global initiative 'Earth Night'. This action aims to reduce light pollution, raising awareness about the harmful effects of excessive artificial light on the environment, human health, and nature.

The wastewater treatment plant in Mannheim will lead the way by deactivating the lighting of its distinctive tanks and heat storage, usually lit with self-generated LED lights, for the event. For safety reasons, the rest of the lighting on the premises will remain in operation.

Other institutions within Mannheim participating in Earth Night include the Luisenpark, the National Theatre, and the planetarium. The Luisenpark will turn off park lighting around 11:45 PM for the rest of the event. The National Theatre (NTM) will deactivate the outdoor lighting of OPAL, the Old Cinema Franklin, and the construction site of the playhouse at the Goetheplatz from 10:00 PM for the entire night. The lighting of other NTM buildings will be minimized, with only safety lighting active if necessary.

The art gallery in Mannheim will also join the initiative by turning off the facade spotlights, the sign above the main entrance, and the lighting of the artwork 'Kosuth' for the Earth Night event. The Technical Town Hall will turn off non-essential lighting and control it by motion sensors. The lighting at the entrance on the ground floor will be dimmed to 30%.

The Mannheim Planetarium invites everyone to experience the starry sky in an undisturbed environment during the observation evening, which will take place from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM on September 19. Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums (REM) has been operating without the lighting of the armory facade, demonstrating a continuous example of responsible light usage.

The city encourages citizens to participate in the Earth Night event by turning off unnecessary lights or closing curtains to make the night sky visible. Practical tips for environmentally friendly lighting can be found at www.our website/light pollution.

Join Mannheim and other cities around the world in making a difference for Earth Night 2025. Together, we can reduce light pollution and protect our environment.
